Sylvia Ann
Jaynes
Nov 11, 1941 — Jan 10, 2023
Sylvia Ann "Annie" (Brooks) Jaynes passed in peace from this life on January 10, 2023 at the age of 81 years.
Born on November 11, 1941 to Eugene and Edith Brooks, Annie was raised in the rural mining town of Park Hills, MO along with her older sister Janet (Marion Bailey) and younger sister Gloria (Richard Botkin). As a child, Annie most looked forward to family trips in the car, including several to the West where she eventually fell in love with Colorado.
Annie pursued 'the road less traveled' by women of her generation. A hard and diligent worker – and masterful organizer – she forged a career that led her to live in various locations in the Southeast and Western U.S. As an executive administrative assistant, Annie eventually worked directly for CEOs and top-level management at large corporations and institutions including Bass Pro Shops and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) University. Employment at Gates Rubber Company in Denver during the 1970s would prove fortuitous decades later but, in the interim, Annie moved back to Missouri in be helpful to her aging parents. Her loyal Denver friend Diane Asbury frequently visited, with Annie serving as tour guide for shopping, shows in Branson and craft fairs throughout the region.
Annie immersed herself in professional life, while also pursuing avocational interests in travel, ancestry research, homemaking and decorating; she especially enjoyed preparing for Christmas. As a gifted singer, Annie involved herself in musical performance with Sweet Adelines. Her life as a happy single continued into her early 60s when she reconnected with a former "boss" from Gates: John Jaynes – widowed father of four and grandfather of eight – whom Annie married in July 2006. She then found herself back in Colorado, living in a world of grandkids' piano recitals, soccer games and swimming meets. She dressed up as a fortune teller for the family carnival, watched the toddler while everyone else hiked the Grand Canyon, and ultimately won everyone over with her strawberry lemonade. John commended Annie for being such a good sport about family life, always saying "Had the roles been reversed, I'da never signed up!"
Together, John and Annie spent much time planning for and pursuing domestic and international travel, Annie coming home from each trip with tens of thousands of photographs for scrapbooking. The couple led family Thanksgiving trips to Hawaii, took each 12-year-old grandchild on a special trip, and hosted Annie's family from Missouri at the Jaynes family cabin on Grand Mesa in Western Colorado.
John preceded Annie in death by 11 days. Annie is survived by her sister Gloria (Rich); nieces and nephews Debbie Bailey (Chris Stegall), Shelly Bailey (Mark Wampler), Mark Bailey (Shelly) and Chad Botkin (Scarlett); and numerous great nieces and nephews. Surviving members of the Jaynes clan include Illene Roggensack, Shellylynne and Tony Heideman, Angie and Phil Barner, John II and Rachel; and grandkids Aaron and Xio, Katie and Preston, A.J. and Halie, Taylor, Philip, Sophie, Drew and Izzy.
A celebration of life and burial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24 at St. Francois Memorial Park Cemetery in Bonne Terre, MO. While Annie's body will be laid to its eternal rest with several generations of Brooks family members, she died in confidence of unification with her Savior, her husband and sister, parents, grandparents and other loved ones who have preceded her in death.
